Established on September 2, 1944, Pure In Heart Missionary Baptist Church began with a simple vision: to honor God through genuine service and deep-rooted compassion. Known warmly as the “Small Church with a Big Heart,” we have spent decades building a spiritual home where every soul is truly seen and cherished. We believe that faith is about authentic connection rather than outward perfection. Here, we embrace the beauty of being present over being perfect, trusting that God works through our honest hearts. Whether we are worshipping, serving, or supporting one another, we do it all with love, sincerity, and joy.
The Pastor
Pastor Rev. Dr. Ben Clayton Jr.
Pastor Dr. Ben Clayton, Jr. is a compassionate servant‑leader dedicated to God, his family, and the community. A proud graduate of Detroit Northwestern High School, he went on to earn a B.A. in Organizational Management from Ashford University, an M.A. in Theological Studies and Post‑Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Counseling from Liberty University, and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Religious Education from Union Baptist Seminary. His academic journey reflects his lifelong commitment to spiritual formation, leadership, and excellence.
After serving honorably for twenty years in the United States Army and retiring as a Master Sergeant, Dr. Clayton brought the discipline, integrity, and heart shaped in the military into his ministry. His decorated service — including the Bronze Star, the Army Meritorious Service Medal, and the Joint Service Meritorious Medal — reflects a life built on courage, character, and a deep love for people.
As the Senior Pastor of Pure in Heart Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, Dr. Clayton leads with a focus on being intentional, intimate, and intense in faith. His teaching and pastoral care are rooted in helping others find healing, authentic growth, and a closer walk with Christ. Beyond the church walls, he serves as Moderator of the Greater Love District, where he mentors pastors and supports congregations across the region.
A recognized civic leader, Dr. Clayton is also the Purchasing Agent for the City of Taylor and a former City Commissioner. He remains deeply active in community service through the 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit, the Taylor Rotary, and as Chaplain of Kappa Lambda Chi Military Fraternity, Inc.
As an author and educator, he is passionate about spiritual clarity and discipleship, expressed through his book When Heaven Moves and Humanity Responds. His work reflects a calling to help believers grow in wisdom, purpose, and spiritual maturity.
Most importantly, he is the devoted husband of First Lady Tanya Warner Clayton and a proud father in their blended family of five. His greatest joy is helping every person experience the peace, purpose, and power of God.
